Lucky Iris are making waves as the next hyperpop act, following in the footsteps of Charli XCX, SOPHIE, and 100 gecs. Their latest project is an exciting mixtape by the name of ‘fall in love with the dj’. As the pioneers of ‘crunchy pop’, the EP, unsurprisingly, contains lots of layered crackling textures.
Title track ‘fall in love with the dj’ provides a captivating introduction to the EP. It’s a danceable track with electro-pop beats and glitchy production. Lines like “I’m not wanting to forget I just want to feel something” and “So I get my body moving” perfectly capture the feeling of embarking on a night out in the hopes that you can leave your problems behind at the club door and have a brief reprieve from life.
‘i just want to dance’ combines soaring pop sounds and vocals with the duo’s signature layered textures to create a catchy track. The lyrics perfectly immortalise the hedonistic club lifestyle that informs and inspires all of Lucky Iris’ work. Released as the first single from the project, ‘play me like a speaker’, saw the band expanding their horizons with this untethered and explosive club tune.
Speaking about the mixtape Maeve, who is one half of Lucky Iris, says, “‘fall in love with the dj’ is about finally making the music we want to hear. It’s about dancing, it’s about yearning, it’s about love and loss and most of all it’s about music. Whatever it is, it’s crunchy, it’s pop music and ultimately, it’s meant to be enjoyed.”
‘heart 4 heart’ is an intense, dance floor ready track fraught with eruptive energy. Thumping club anthem ‘in the club’ zigzags with energy and anticipation. The beat is infectious and the soft vocals contrast pleasingly with the song’s synthetic, staticky textures.
Final track ‘sixteen’ begins as a 2016-esque pop track before transforming into a layered club track with a tempestuous feel to it. It flits between sputtering verses and eruptive choruses, before it slowly fades out. The song feels like one which would be played as the finale at a club night, making it the perfect end to the mixtape.

‘fall in love with the dj’ showcases the duo’s daring genre-bending capabilities and ability to be unflinchingly authentic. The mixtape is out now via EMI North Records label partner Launchpad+ and available to listen to on streaming services.
