Nashville-based singer and songwriter Kelley Cole has released her latest single, Illusions, an indie-rock track that explores the discontentment of living in a fragmented world, and the ways we try to cope with it.
The song opens with a distinctive, echoing guitar riff and soft vocals, gradually building into a push-and-pull between momentous, rocky choruses and contemplative, melodic verses. This contrast creates a sense of restlessness that keeps the listener on edge, never quite sure what’s coming next. It mirrors the song’s central theme: dissatisfaction with an increasingly turbulent world – a feeling many can relate to. As the track progresses, Cole’s powerful vocals break through, perfectly complementing the dynamic instrumentation.
Cole’s lyricism carries real depth in Illusions, with standout lines like: “Cause what I don’t know can’t hurt me / So I’ll pretend to believe.” Here, she reflects on the desire to disconnect from the overwhelming noise of constant headlines and overstimulation, while grappling with the guilt of doing so.
