In their latest single ‘Say The Word’, indie-folk pop duo Sunflower Thieves return to the theme which is central to their work: platonic love. However, this time they’re revisiting the topic with a slightly darker sound.

Angelic harmonies kick off the track which then turns to a moodier sound as the first verse starts. Twinkling production and ethereal vocals contrast with melancholic guitar and drums. As it progresses, the song transforms into a more uplifting sound, reflecting the joy of girlhood and its ability to triumph over anything.

Sunflower Thieves’ ever impressive songwriting and collaborative approach are showcased throughout the song. Co-written with Liv Greenlees and co-produced with long-time collaborator Jack Hardman, the single is a celebration of their unshakable friendship. With lines such as “Plagiarise a state of mind / So you don’t have to feel it” and “I’d stay all night long / I’d crash this car / I’d turn myself in / I’d kill anyone / Just say the word and I’ll do it”, Sunflower Thieves are showing just how deep their love for one another runs; love which can be felt and heard in all of their work.

With ‘Say The Word’, Sunflower Thieves have immortalised their undying bond of sisterhood in an entrancing song. The single is available to listen to now on all streaming services and a music video for the track which is inspired by Thelma & Louise and Gilmore Girls is out now. If you want to catch them live, they will be supporting The Staves on the 21st of August at Cottingham Folk Festival.
