Hot off the heels of her third album, Australian indie-pop artist Gordi has shared a soaring and emotive new track called ‘Instant Life’.

The song has a melancholy air to it in the intro and first verse before it builds up to an explosive, soaring, and pulsating chorus. The track has a sense of existentialism about it, oscillating between the lows of the verses and the highs of the choruses and bridge. This feeling of existentialism is something which is apparent in much of Gordi’s music, and is perhaps a result of her tumultuous experiences of working in healthcare during the pandemic. She enlisted the help of Grammy winning producer Peter Katis on ‘Instant Life’ and it appears to be a pairing made in heaven on this emotion filled and enthralling song.

Written in Los Angeles with Ryan Linvill and slimdan, the track is about wanting to be impulsive and escape. Speaking about the song, Gordi says that it’s “an invitation to a certain kind of recklessness. The desire to feel nothing at all. To seek just a moment of escape. Find a mute button.”

The pursuit of recklessness and escapism that Gordi mentions is evident in the song’s lyrics from the get go: “King Street / Late one night / I got in her car she took me for a ride / I thought maybe this is how I die”. Gordi’s ability to enshrine her experiences in poetic lyrics is at it’s best on this single, showcased in lines like “Talk to me intangibly / In some abject philosophy / ‘Cause I am at capacity / For making sense of anything”. Gordi is adept at capturing life and its fleeting moments in her lyrics, and this song is no exception to that talent.

‘Instant Life’ is a testament to Gordi’s songwriting and commitment to her art. Few artists can follow up a successful album in such a surprising and captivating way. ‘Instant Life’ is out now via Mushroom Music and available to listen to on streaming services.
