As a singer, songwriter, and pianist, Cuban-Italian pop artist Izzy Escobar’s talents know no bounds. Her vocal prowess, skill for capturing emotions in witty lyrics, and ability to instantly draw the listener in are exhibited in full force on her debut EP ‘Sunny In London’.
The EP opens with ‘Vendetta’, Escobar’s viral hit that has amassed over 1 million streams. Soulful vocals, piano and drums come together in the intro before the song picks up the pace and builds up to an explosive chorus reminiscent of Adele’s music. As the song progresses, it builds up to a crescendo where Escobar lets her rage run wild and is delightfully vengeful.
‘White Horse’ begins as a stripped back track which allows for Escobar’s vocal talents to take centre stage. The choruses are catchy and melodic. During the bridge, strings and drums compliment Escobar’s crooning as she ponders whether she is ready for a relationship. The singer’s Cuban and Italian heritage comes through in the soulfulness and intentional instrumentalism on this track.
Title track ‘Sunny In London’ begins with a cinematic intro consisting of strings and rumbling drums that instantly captures the listener’s attention. The song then bursts into a pop-soul sound with clean beats and soaring choruses, similar to that of R&B singer Raye. On this track, Escobar reminisces on a failed relationship, using the weather as a metaphor for how she’s feeling: “It’s raining in my heart / It’s pouring / So cold in my soul / It’s snowing”. This ability to translate her deepest emotions into clever and relatable lyrics is something which sets Escobar apart from her contemporaries.
‘Nevermine’ begins with electric guitar and strong vocals. The emotions on this track are palpable as Escobar sings about a lost love and reminisces on past experiences. Additional instruments are added to the song as it unfolds, giving it extra depth. Lyrics like “‘Cause life’s a train, get on and off / I only knew you for a couple stops / But I’ll never forget our short ride” once again show Escobar’s talent for capturing universal experiences in a unique way.
‘Three More Glasses’ is a pop-perfect track with catchy melodies, strings, and smooth production. The EP’s final track, ‘Jackie O’, has a darker sound to it, with heavy drums and intermittent staccato strings. The song’s lyrics are sexy and daring, such as “Light me like a cigarette / Smoke me out but never gone”. Escobar compares the song’s subject to a Kennedy before saying “I could be your Jackie O / I’ll be your First Lady”. This song is bold and expressive. It perfectly sums up the EP.
‘Sunny In London’ establishes Izzy Escobar as one of the most exciting emerging artists as of late. The singer’s dazzling talents and fearlessness are at the forefront of each and every track on the EP. Her witty lyricism, attention-grabbing intros, and pop-soul hybrid sound are sure to propel her to great heights of success.
