Up and coming retro-electronic artist Sophie Grey has released her newest hit ‘Lunar Highs’, the perfect summer anthem.
Sophie writes, produces and performs her own music. She shared about her writing process for this song with us: “It was definitely impacted by the moon, which makes sense of the name and the lyrics, but it’s about partying on the moon and how crazy and how much more insane that is than on earth.” Explaining that “I try to channel that and share it with everybody so they can feel that energy throughout the song.”
Speaking more about her approach to songwriting, Sophie added: “I usually start with production, and it really depends on the day, because some days it’s the easiest thing ever and it just comes out of me like some sort of energy.”
Sophie also highlighted some of the struggles with getting creativity flowing, “Sometimes I’m not in the right headspace but I just get on my computer and go on my keyboard and I just write because it’s something I want to do and always want to get better at.”
She has been making big waves this year, opening for the likes of Duran Duran, Grace Jones and AJR. When asked about these opportunities, Sophie spoke about the opportunity to open for Druan Duran, “I was sound checking quite early, and they were sound checking at the same time, so it was really fun to share that experience with them.” Noting the nostalgia she felt performing on tour with the icons,“And I mean, it just made me remember all of the songs I grew up listening to and I think they’re incredible, so it was really an honor to be a part of that lineup.”
On tour since June, with her next show on July 31, when asked about her feelings towards touring, she mused “No matter the audience I’m put in front of, they really appreciate the journey I take them on, and the performance, because I love to put on a show, and it’s not like any show you’ve seen.”
Sophie is accompanied on stage by her robot companion File Collins, a creative character the artist uses to continue telling a story throughout her set,“In my galaxy, you’re given a robot companion at birth, so we’ve been tight since day one!… He accompanies me vocally during the shows and he has a personality.”Expanding on her loveable robot sidekick, “He’s kind of this entity that directs the crowd and he loves to support me, which is great, and he’s not a diva either so he’s easy to work with!”
Grey says she is excited for what comes next in her career, expressing her love for performing ahead of her upcoming summer shows: “I just came out with Lunar Highs which I’m really excited about because that video was really crazy to film and half of it is underwater and just crazy and half of it is on the moon so really fun.”
Sophie has upcoming performances at Manchester Pride, and new support dates announced for Shaggy and Boy George, Culture Club at the Accor Arena in France, “It’ll be really fun to watch everyone’s shows too, it’s the best of both worlds – I get to go to festivals and I get to perform at them!”
