Starting off a night of local talent, genre-fusing, female-fronted band Puppy Teeth took to the stage. Many guests of the sold out show turned up early to get to know the upcoming talents based in Edinburgh, whose work spans across styles such as shoegaze, indie-rock and grunge. With Puppy Teeth’s most recently released single, ‘80/20’, being played on BBC Introducing Scotland, the group are marked as talents destined for big things. After a recent headline gig at Sneaky Pete’s, it was amazing to witness the group take on a bigger venue, and bigger venues certainly suit them. Featured on their setlist was debut single ‘Black Honey’, a beautiful track that allows every member of the band to shine. Frontwoman Anna Trost’s ethereal vocals were immersive, and drummer Niamh Jordan was intriguing to watch too. If you love acts like Deftones, Wolf Alice, and Jeff Buckley – and you don’t already know Puppy Teeth – then they are definitely worth getting to know.

Up next were Bernstrum And The Men. Based in Edinburgh, but originally formed in Dumfries, Bernstrum And The Men are a group that were born to perform. They aren’t afraid of screaming, and it happens a lot. The psychedelic-rock four-piece are quickly making a name for themselves in the local scene. They’ve played frequent support slots for other homegrown talents, as well as sets at Whistlebinkies. Their setlist included two released singles amongst a host of uneleased tunes. ‘Riverside’ and ‘Red And Navy’ emphasised their high energy performance style, with unreleased songs that showed what’s yet to come. Ross Whalen and Jacob Hulme alternated on main vocals, Fin Tungatt held down the backing vocals and other screaming responsibilities, and Corey Brown kept the pace and momentum up on drums. It was incredible to finally catch this band live. The response from the growing crowd reflected the energy effortlessly and demonstrated how prominent psychedelic rock is becoming in the local music scene.

Opening with ‘Hot Blondes In Your Area Tonight’, Logan’s Close headline set began with many fans singing every word back to them. Throughout their set, Logan’s Close danced between their impressive catalogue of existing material, and new music that is yet to be released. Their setlist consisted of a range of singles and tracks from 2023 debut album, ‘Heart-Shaped Jacuzzi’. Other popular tracks incorporated into their eclectic set included ‘Babestation’, ‘Gouching on the 33’ and ‘Curious Terrain’. Before some of the songs, Scott Rough and Carl Marah would alternate in telling tales about the upcoming tune. With ‘Dans Le Jardin’, they joked about how the title was slightly less impactful on a French audience, as they explained what it meant. Logan’s Close were fantastic to see live – regardless of who you looked at when they were playing, there was immense talent to see. It was impressive to watch their genre-fusing and generational-combining style come alive. Performing in a sold-out Caves suited them, and it will be intriguing to see where they play next.
