Irish-rock band The Script graced the HISTORY stage in Toronto, opened by Canadian star, Tyler Shaw on August 16th, 2024.
Shaw’s heartfelt pop songs about love and loss made for an emotional, lively, and all-around amazing way to open up the night.
Following the loss of Mark Sheehan last year, The Script released a new album the day of the show, Satellites; embarking on a new chapter in the band’s long-standing career. Fans were treated to some new tunes and old classics from the Dublin-based group, such as Both Ways and Breakeven.
Before performing Nothing, frontman Danny O’Donoghue joked about how he used to call his ex-girlfriend on stage before performing the song. He then invited the fans to call their exes, taking the FaceTime call of one’s soon-to-be ex-boyfriend, and gave a very strong performance all while on call with this unfortunate man.
Bandmates Glen Power on drums, Benjamin Sargeant on bass, and Ben Weaver on guitar played together seamlessly to provide a riveting performance the entire night. A special notice for Glen who supported with beautiful background vocals for most of the set.
The band’s setlist was devised with perfect flow and a variety of tempos to rile up and quiet the crowd. Another notable moment occurred during the Paint The Town Green; an ode to the band’s home of Dublin. Halfway through the song, the band picked up their drums while the crowd clapped along; energy building and building inside the venue before bursting back into the song’s chorus.
The band closed off their set with my favourite song, For The First Time. Fans continued to sing the song’s chorus over and over until the band returned for their finale, closing with the song’s most notable tune, Breakeven.
As a long-time fan of The Script, I think everyone and anyone can enjoy their performance. You can catch The Script on tour now and listen to their new album, Satellites on all music streaming platforms.
