As the cool, fall weather begins to set in over Toronto, Lola Young brings the heat to The Phoenix at the top of her “This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway” tour.

The 23-year old UK artist has had an impressive career so far: she was nominated for the Brit Award for Rising Star in 2021, and opened for Melanie Martinez earlier this year. Young also performed at this year’s Lollapalooza and Osheaga music festivals before starting on her own international tour.

As the first solo show date on the tour, Canadian fans were eager to see Lola at The Phoenix, a well-loved concert hall in downtown Toronto. It was fitting for a Toronto show at this iconic venue to have local artist Rachel Bobbitt open the show. Hailing from Nova Scotia, Bobbitt is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter with a hauntingly beautiful voice. Rachel’s soft and sometimes somber set was a nice contrast to the angsty, high-energy performance by Lola Young.

Lola Young started off her set with “Good Books”, “Wish You Were Dead”, and “Fuck”; all from her new album, “This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway”, released in June. Much of Lola’s music from TWMFYA is fierce, with interesting and humorous lyrics. Songs like “Big Brown Eyes” are reminiscent of Remi Wolf’s work; vibrant, strong, and quirky. There are also influences of Frank Ocean in some of her lyrics.  Supported by her talented band, Young delivered a great performance for her dedicated Canadian fans who sang her songs right back at her. New and old listeners can both find elements of her music that spark interest in intrigue. We can expect Young to have a continued successful career ahead of her.

Lola Young continues on tour throughout the United States at venues and festivals across the country before a quick stop in Vancouver and onto the UK and Europe. Tickets are still available for the rest of her tour dates.
