Wallows delivered an outstanding performance at the O2 Academy last night, more than living up to the anticipation. The American indie band, touring their latest album Tell Me That It’s Over, turned what could have been a typical midweek gig into something remarkable.
Opening with “Do Not Wait,” they set a high bar that they maintained throughout the evening. The sound was flawless, the energy consistent, and the band’s chemistry was evident from the start. Their seamless blend of new material with fan favourites showcased their craft, with “Are You Bored Yet?” sparking one of the most genuine crowd responses I’ve seen recently—everyone knew every word.
Wallows’ stage presence is notably authentic. Between songs, their excitement about being in the UK felt genuine rather than rehearsed. Their observations on British culture were natural and engaging, which was refreshing for an international band on tour.
The highlight of the night came when Braden took to the balcony for a solo performance. It was a clever touch that shifted the venue’s atmosphere, making the large O2 Academy feel surprisingly intimate. The spontaneity of the moment added something special to an already impressive show.
Their finale, “Only Friend,” tied the night together perfectly. The energy in the room was electric—even those in the seated section couldn’t help but join in. It was one of those moments that reminds you why live music is so powerful.
Technically, the show was handled with precision—clear sound, well-designed lighting, and smooth transitions throughout. But what truly set the performance apart was how the band balanced technical skill with genuine emotion. Every song felt polished yet fresh.
In a year filled with strong performances in Birmingham, Wallows have certainly left their mark. This wasn’t just a good show—it was a demonstration of why their star is rising. Based on this performance, larger venues are definitely on the horizon.
If you get the chance to catch them on their next visit, don’t miss it—it’s well worth your time.
