If you’ve ever needed a boost after the end of an era, then Venus Anon has the EP for you. Following on from 2023 album Nocturnal, the four track Catharsis is an empathetic soundtrack to ending a relationship, and the feelings that come as a result. With tracks written, performed, and produced by Venus Anon herself, this is truly an EP from the soul. This is evident in the Swedish artist’s emotional lyricism and crystal-clear vocals.
‘Nothing’s Really Over, Not With Anyone’ is a short but sweet kickstart to a collection of relatability and understanding. At just over 2 minutes in duration, there is a lot to unpack. It’s a breakup track with a twist, a dance-infused melody becoming an instant mood booster. It’s an impressive and effective introduction to the concept of ‘Catharsis’, revelling in strong emotions that may be impacting other aspects of life. In a way, it underwrites that the first stage to understanding these emotions is accepting that nothing will ever truly be over.
Second track ‘Shoulder’ compliments the first with a similar upbeat momentum. Even among an amalgamation of eclectic arrangements, Venus Anon’s vibrant vocals can still be heard clearly. This tune acts as an evolution to the first track. Once you’ve accepted the situation you’re in, you can help others, “you could always cry on my shoulder”.
‘Spooky’ is written and performed by Venus Anon alongside Denzel Himself. Still following a faster tempo, their intricate penmanship explains consequences for things that have perhaps gone wrong. There are “sleepless nights” with the poignant lyric, “pay for the peace of mind that’s missing” – capturing beautifully those nights of post-breakup racing thoughts.
Final track ‘Ready For Slaughter’ is a piano ballad of sorts, full of raw emotion. Venus Anon vocalises vulnerability with questions like “don’t you feel strange? / I know I do”. The melody creates an accepting environment; the lyric “Nobody knew me back then” shines a light on the idea that in relationships you often see a different side to a person than others. It is a delicate discussion that ties back to the opening track, where nothing is ever truly finished, “I look for you in every corner”.
Catharsis is an incredible EP that many will find comfort in. With emotional ballads and songs to dance to, there is a mix for any emotional escapade and every feeling has been intricately articulated by Venus Anon.
