Rising alternative artist Lucas Assagba’s latest single off her upcoming EP is a cathartic and introspective track about navigating the complexities of post traumatic stress. ‘Nosebleeds’ follows the success of Assagba’s last single, ‘Comet’, which was featured on Vevo’s Emerging Artist playlist in July.
The song begins with just electric guitar on its own, giving the song a laidback feel. As Assagba’s vocals are added to the mix, they enhance the track and her emotions are palpable. This emotiveness gives the song an added layer, owing to Assagba’s ability to convey what she is feeling solely in her vocals. As the track progresses, it builds up to an emotional and musical release, with Assagba’s emotions and the music cascading at the same time.
The song has clear indie-rock influences which give it edge and depth. The song feels like a form of therapy for both Assagba and the listener, as it allows both to release whatever emotions they may be holding on to. Assagba’s ability to observe and pay attention to her inner-most feelings and enshrine them in relatable lyrics is prevalent on this emotional track.
Speaking about the single, Assagba said “The whole track materialised over the course of 24 hours, it was as if months worth of tears and stress had led to this one moment. I was just coming out of a really strange space in my life, and I couldn’t gather my thoughts about the stress I felt and how it had evolved over the past six months. I really love writing about the passage of time, and I suppose the whole song is about the changing of the seasons and how it affects our lives.”
‘Nosebleeds’ is out now and available to listen to on all streaming services. Assagba is one of 4 artists from Come Play With Me Records’ Next Up North, the premier artist development programme for emerging artists of marginalised genders and sexualities from the North of England. The ‘Next Up North: Class of 2025’ vinyl compilation is available to buy now. To keep up to date with Lucas, you can connect with her on social media.
