Rising indie-pop artist Marta recently released a captivating EP by the name of ‘Wrong Woman (Part II)’. It serves as a follow up to ‘Wrong Woman (Part I)’, an EP, released by the Latvian singer last year. While the first part of the ‘Wrong Woman’ series centred around Marta reclaiming her voice, the second part is an exploration of the different forms of love, as Marta frees herself of the fear of being judged.
The EP begins with melodic vocals and finger-picked acoustic guitar on opening track ‘Not Afraid to Love You’. The pace picks up in the pre-chorus and, as additional instruments are added in, the song’s emotions come to life. The track is the first song Marta wrote in English, inspiring her to embark on a new chapter with her work. It’s a touching and vulnerable song that lays bear Marta’s emotions and showcases her ability to tap into her feelings when songwriting.
The driving beat on ‘Run Away’, combined with Marta’s strong vocals and memorable lyrics, make it an enjoyable track to listen to. Lines such as “So hold me till the fire takes over this place / And I’ll say you were always my favourite mistake” show her ability to capture fleeting moments in relationships and immortalise them in poignant lyrics.
Sandwiched in the middle of the EP is an inventive track by the name of ‘Cool’. This song packs a punch and plenty of attitude with its clear 80s pop influences. Breathy vocals contrast with the alternative production which makes for a catchy and intriguing track. As the song progresses, Marta indulges in her genre-bending tendencies, drawing on the boldness of 80s female pop powerhouses and combining it with the experimentalism of contemporary acts like The 1975.
‘Fangirls’ is a love letter to Marta’s fans, who are known as the ‘Martinis’. Electric guitar and layered vocals make this a very catchy track. The song begins with the playful line “You’re in the front row sipping on my Martini” and the repeated lines in the track’s chorus “Fangirls make the world go round / Fangirls turn it upside down / Fangirls always sing it loud” is an homage to the power of fandom culture.
‘Lovable’ is a pop-perfect track with an unexpected underlying moodiness to it. It’s a danceable track with tuneful melodies and passionate lyrics, such as “My heart has been used up by you in a day / Your genius ways, they drive me insane”. The verses have a slightly darker sound to them which contrast pleasingly with the upbeat choruses. It’s the perfect way to end the EP.
