Annie Hamilton’s latest single ‘rosemary’, inspired by those simple yet beautiful moments that are innate to the human experience, embraces uncertainty and life’s grittiness. The Sydney-based artist has finally released the track after years of playing it live to adoring fans who repeatedly requested to hear it. Enlisting the help of co-producer Bonnie Knight, who is also a collaborator with Amyl & The Sniffers and Mallrat, Hamilton has created a wistful yet celebratory track that is truly addictive.
‘rosemary’ begins with a swirling and twinkling intro that is enhanced by Hamilton’s soft vocals. Heavy drums kickstart the song, which is an experimental indie-rock anthem. Soaring vocals and screeching electric guitar make for intense and infectious choruses. The track has an air of nostalgia about it as Hamilton belts out the lyrics and the music dances around, taking listeners on a sonic trip.
Written for a friend in need, the song is cathartic, experimental, and turbulent (in the best way possible). Hamilton employs her finely tuned storytelling skills to explore the highs and lows of life in her poetic lyrics. Lines like “There’s no light without shadow / And you say it feels dim / But there’s gold on the water / I’m dying to show you” illustrate Hamilton’s deft songwriting skills and ability to translate life’s fractured nature in her work.
Although Hamilton wrote ‘rosemary’ with a specific friend in mind, her refined songwriting skills make it a truly universal track. ‘rosemary’ is out now and available to listen to on streaming services.
