Charlotte Clarke’s release of ‘I Prefer Karma’ closed January with a fiery burst of pop fury. Following on from her debut EP ‘Growing Pains’ in 2024 and her more recent 2025 single ‘Bound To You’, Charlotte’s new single romanticises heartbreak as a revenge glow-up rather than a sombre affair.

From the very first line, the song captures the dark, anger-fueled side of heartbreak, with lyrics such as “I didn’t wanna change / I wanted something to die” summarising the messy, emotional edge that often arises following a breakup. The lyrics “Blew up my hometown / And haunted my bedroom” further expresses the sense of being unable to escape the constant reminders of an explosive end to a relationship, as well as illustrating the wit and rawness of Charlotte’s lyrics.

By intertwining emotional vulnerability with simmering defiance, ‘I Prefer Karma’ sets itself apart from other breakup songs due to its refreshing honesty and the distinct lack of Charlotte sugarcoating her heartbreak with metaphors. The synth backing track framing the lyrics adds a late-night, listening whilst sipping wine vibe to the single, as well as making it catchy and perfect for belting at a concert – which I’m sure her loyal fanbase of CHARmers will be jumping for the chance to do.

In many ways, the song stands as an anthem for those who have loved with everything they have and come out of the other side scorched but still standing. Overall, the song screams the message of ‘I deserve better’ and proves that thriving is possible post-breakup.

With this early 2026 release, Charlotte has established herself as continuing to be her fans’ lucky charm. If ‘I Prefer Karma’ is any indication of what we can expect in terms of future music, fans can hope for more hard-hitting, feminist-driven anthems that are perfect for screaming in the shower or on a late-night drive.
