LA’s fearless grunge-punk act Kit Major isn’t afraid to go against the grain. With her new EP, ‘Miss Ego’, Major is combining rock and roll sensibilities with brazen songwriting, and leaning into her rebelliousness.

The EP gets off to a bold and rocky start with ‘Not As Witty As I Used To Be’. Major’s screeching and shouty punk vocals are bolstered by the loud electric guitar and crashing drums on this honest track. Lyrics like “Got a lock on my heart / And no spare to leave” illustrate Major’s ability to not only tap into her vulnerability but also shout it out loud for everyone to hear. At just 1 minute and 45 seconds long, this song is the perfect first taste of the ‘Miss Ego’ EP.

‘Messin’ With Me’ continues Major’s rock and roll flare, this time with more melodious vocals. The song keeps the listener on their toes as the guitar zig-zags and Major’s singing takes centre stage in the brash choruses.

Title track ‘Miss Ego’ begins with muted electric guitar before things ramp up in the chorus. Conversational vocals add to the brattiness of the track, in which Major explores the facts that women are expected to be humble, and make themselves as small and as quiet as they can be. The song is full of attitude and Major defies these social expectations by loudly repeating “Oh no, the girl’s got an ego” in a mocking tone.

‘Punk Rock Boyfriend’ is fast paced from the get-go, with crashing drums and full-throttle choruses that Major almost spits out. The song is accompanied by a music video that perfectly encapsulates her dynamic and infectious live performances, which embody the frenetic energy of her music.

Powerful and unapologetic, ‘Invalidate Me’ is an ode to stepping into your own and not letting others dictate who you are or what you are capable of. The song is catchy, with pop-adjacent choruses and layered instrumentalism.

‘Step On My Neck’ has a retro feel with driving guitar and ear worm hooks. The song is filled with both desire and resentment, as Major finds herself caught up in her feelings and unable to express herself: “It’s like a curse / I can’t even talk to you / I’ve forgotten all my words.”

The ‘Miss Ego’ EP sees Kit Major liberating herself from others’ expectations and refusing to hold herself back. She is unapologetically and loudly herself on each and every track, all of which are filled to the brim with feminist and punk sentiments.
