On the 17th October, punk rock powerhouses VENUS GRRRLS returned to their home city of Leeds for a sold out headline show at The Key Club. For one night, and one night only, the venue was transformed from its typical dance floor chaos into a booming coven as they delivered a spellbinding set, complete with witchy vibes and angry girl tunes, cast with enough volume to make us levitate (or at least mosh).
Support act PAVÉ warmed up the stage – PAVÉing the way for the night’s main act, if you will – as their music was perfectly complementary to that of VENUS GRRRLS. Their set was packed with soaring punk anthems and dance rock, filling the room with a sweet blend of riot, joy, and grooving.
Shortly after, VENUS GRRRLS arrived to a room teeming with excitement, as cheers threatened to take off the roof. It was impossible for eyes in the room to be anywhere other than on frontwoman Grace Kelly, as she immediately took full command of the bodies in the room with her incredible timbre.
The band were co-ordinated both sonically and aesthetically, as they wore matching black and white lace outfits, looking every bit the spellbinding sirens that their sound conjures. Between pulsing basslines, thunderous drums, and shimmering synths, VENUS GRRRLS delivered a set that was both cathartic and transcendent – a celebration of rage, unity, and unapologetic femininity.
Highlights of the set included f-you anthem ‘Liar Liar’: “This one’s for your ex!” and the menacing crowd-pleaser ‘Hex’, which had the audience chanting along, authentic ritual style.
Between rallying cries and gorgeous melodies, VENUS GRRRLS successfully unified the crowd with their musical ferocity and enthralling chemistry, cementing their place as one of the alternative scene’s most exciting up-and-coming bands.
