Sunflower Thieves is a female pop-folk duo from Leeds, who are currently touring the UK and Europe with Dan Croll. Their upcoming EP, ‘Same Blood’ strikes a healthy balance between hopefulness and melancholia, delving into themes such as love, loss, sisterhood and mental health.
The first track on the EP, titled ‘How Was America’ combines harmonious ethereal vocals with quiet acoustic guitar strums that build up into a fuller indie sound. The song has raw, vulnerable lyrics about loss, grief and heartbreak – emotions which are often intertwined.
‘Driving Lessons’ is an honest, introspective song about struggles with mental health. The line “I get too dizzy on this roundabout” perfectly captures the feeling of being overwhelmed. There are pockets of a more alt-pop sound dispersed throughout this track, reminiscent of The 1975’s music. This song feels more grown up and grittier than the duo’s previous music.
The distinct folky vocals on ‘So Far So Good’ mark it out as a standout track on this EP. The loneliness spoken of in the first verse is palpable and references to God and religion allude to the idea that life is out of our control. Despite the verses having an air of wistfulness, the chorus is more hopeful. The track is elevated by the violin and soft beat in the background.
Title track ‘Same Blood’ is an uplifting song about sisterhood, and more specifically, the duo’s relationship with each other. The electric guitar enhances the track, creating undertones of indie music. This is definitely my favourite track on the EP.
The final track called ‘West Park Drive’, is a poignant way to end the EP, with delicate piano, ambient acoustic guitar and melodic vocals. The speaking during the intro and outro of the song makes the listener feel like they are getting to witness a series of memories.
The songs have a similar sound to tracks by Nina Nesbitt, Phoebe Bridgers and Holly Humberstone, but more stripped back and raw. The EP’s honest lyrics and pop-folk sound, with hints of alternative-indie, show that the duo have turned the page on a new chapter.
‘Same Blood’ is due to be released via Kartel Music Group on October 30.
