‘Sobering’ is the stunning debut from 20-year-old singer-songwriter Hetta Falzon. Born and raised in Somerset and now based in Manchester, Falzon uses songwriting as a source of happiness and healing, putting honesty and vulnerability at the forefront of everything she creates.
“Sobering is an intimate and unflinching reflection on unspoken feelings and quiet heartbreak,” she explains. Written about unrequited love, the track captures the exquisite torment of being completely enamoured with someone while having nowhere for those overwhelming feelings to go. Falzon’s words cut deep as she sings about “living with a situation you can’t change.”

Few debut singles feel as raw and timeless as ‘Sobering’. Her lyrical honesty, paired with gut-wrenching melodies, makes for a song that is as moving as it is memorable. The emotional depth and subtle sophistication of her songwriting bring to mind artists like Celeste and Tom Odell, yet Falzon’s sound remains wholly her own.
Drawing on her background in jazz, pop, and classical music, ‘Sobering’ balances intricate harmonies with stripped-back arrangements, creating something that feels both intimate and expansive. ‘Sobering’ exemplifies Falzon’s gift for storytelling – blending the old with the new to craft something that feels universally relatable while remaining deeply personal. With its delicate piano lines and haunting vocals, the song carries an ache that lingers long after it ends, inviting listeners to sit with their own unspoken emotions.
This is just the beginning for Hetta Falzon, who has much more on the horizon. On Sunday, February 2nd, fans can experience ‘A Sobering Evening with Hetta Falzon’ at Fuel in Manchester to celebrate the release of her debut single. Fans can look forward to live and orchestral versions of ‘Sobering’ in the near future, as well as an EP set to release later this year.
‘Sobering’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
