Since releasing her first EP in 2020, Avery Lynch has amassed over 370,000 monthly listeners as well as a dedicated following on social media. For the past seven months, the singer-songwriter has been gradually painting a picture for her listeners through a series of new singles, building up to a project set to release in September.
Describing herself as “a happy girl with sad songs”, Lynch has thrown a curveball with the latest of these tracks, straying from her usual melancholic relatability as ‘Lasting Effects’ takes a more optimistic stance on a breakup, exploring how loss can encourage someone to grow and heal from those who have hurt them.
The acoustic guitar makes this song immediately feel lighter than many of Lynch’s previous works, which have often been piano-centric, utilising the rich tone of the piano to emphasise her delicate and vulnerable vocals. Instead, the string’s subtle twang uplifts and brightens her shyly optimistic lyricism.

From the very start, Lynch explores the silver linings of the breakup, noting that it’s probably good that “I’ll never find someone like you”. Throughout the chorus, she muses on some of the things that have improved in this person’s absence from her life, and how it has encouraged her to appreciate aspects of herself that she previously didn’t.
In tandem with the subtle guitar, her soft delivery of lyrics such as “And you thought that you left me wrecked / But these were your lasting effects” reinforces how much this person’s leaving helped her to grow and created an overall positive impact on her, despite their attempt to hurt her.
The elegant optimism is sustained throughout the track, offering a noticeable shift in Lynch’s journey. A breath of fresh air amongst Lynch’s darker discography, ‘Lasting Effects’ feels like finally opening the window after a week of sitting alone in a stuffy room agonising about everything. The fifth piece in a wider picture, ‘Lasting Effects’, adds a new dimension to her upcoming mystery project, offering a side of Lynch that she rarely shows through her music.
‘Lasting Effects’ is available to stream now, and you can follow @averylynchh on Instagram to keep up to date with her latest releases.
