Australian duo Royel Otis (Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic) have been making waves with their unique take on infectious indie pop, which culminated in the release of their genre-defining debut record PRATTS & PAINS.
Plucked from their upcoming sophomore offering (hickey) due out late this August, their latest venture, ‘car’ (co-written by the duo alongside Blake Slatkin (Gracie Abrams, Omar Apollo) and Omer Fedi (Lil Nas X, the Kid LAROI), takes its roots in melodic jangle pop. Offering a more simplistic approach to their sound, ‘car’ sits as the bittersweet younger sister to ‘Oysters In My Pocket’.
Boasting heartbreaking sentiments (“You know I love the taste of your water, but I think it’s time to say goodbye”), with this new cut, Royel Otis are swimming in grief and reflecting on difficult, but necessary goodbyes. Similar to its predecessor, ‘moody’, ‘car’ is exactly that, a moody yet sweet take on loss and love.
Making its live debut at NYC’s Governor’s Ball, ‘car’ is an exciting teaser of what to expect from this new chapter of Royel Otis.
