Manchester based artist Anna Lynch returns with her second single as a solo artist , ‘My Body’. With a sound infused with the essence of jazz, soul and r&b, Anna cites artists such as Amy Winehouse and Olivia Dean as some of her musical influences. Having worked for years to hone her craft as a singer- songwriter, Anna’s voice is tightly controlled and technically perfect, truly reminiscent of the great names she takes influence from.
On the first listen of ‘My Body’, I was taken aback by the way Anna’s vocals weave and blend through the music , in perfect harmony with the rising and falling brass section and drums, as if the lyrics are a vehicle for the music to move through. Her voice soars like a crescendo throughout the track, but drips like butter when it needs to, and fills the music with richness. On second listen, the power of the lyrics shone through for me. Anna wrote the song “off the back of reading a book called ‘the body keeps the score’ and at the time was very interested in the ways in which the human body stores emotions throughout”.
Her lyrics talk of the power of emotional and physical release, coming to terms with hard truths, and rediscovering the mind-body connection needed in order to truly practice caring for oneself. The line “What are you scared of? Let go” carries through as a reminder of the importance of release as something non-destructive, as an act of love and passing through emotions. It is a powerful message and it is refreshing to see an artist in the early stages of their career bare their emotions and internal journey so openly.

This is an impressive second release from Anna Lynch, I listened to it six times in a row when I first heard it. It is the type of song to get lost in the melody with your eyes closed on public transport, with a voice that warms like sunlight filtering through the window and warming your skin. It works like easy listening for the ears but carries with it an emotionally charged message, the product of years dedicated to crafting songs and performing in jazz and blues based musical environments. To see Anna perform live, catch her at one of her various support slots as she rounds out a very successful debut year.
She will be releasing a full-length EP in the new year and I am very much looking forward to hearing more from her. ‘My Body’ is out now and available to listen to on streaming services. Make sure to follow Anna Lynch on social media to keep up to date with her!
